A Day of Fashion with Taylor Gangnon

Alejandra Caballero Virginia Tech

The Hokie Designer's SpringFever Fashion show is not an everyday occurrence. This is the first fashion the Hokie Designer's have ever put on and has been a step forward for those involved. Taylor Gagnon, junior Fashion and Merchandise major was one of those involved who was eager to participate and put her pieces on display. Someone who helped her do so was Sonali Shah, freshman in Computer Model Data Analytics, "Usually I would have tried to have my pieces in the show, but I was really busy this semester, but I think I'll go ahead and try to next spring."

Shah herself is part of the Hokie Designer's club at Virginia Tech and in her free time makes her own fashion pieces but in a more sustainable route: by taking old clothes, cutting them up, and finding a new way to wear something.

"One time I took a pair of my brother's old jeans because he said he was going throw them away, so I cut it up and made myself a top purse out of them," said Shah.

Shah got into upcycling fashion during the COVID-19 pandemic when she was bored and used the time to pursue interests she had never had the time for until then. She didn't want clothes to go to waste just because they didn't fit her or anyone else.

Though Shah missed out on this year's SpringFever Fashion show, she was still able to help and participate as Gagnon's model and hopes to see her own piece up on that stage at the same time next spring with a sustainable twist.
